I Will if You Will women and girls fitness movement
In September 2013 Sport England chose Bury as the location to pilot a Lottery funded ground-breaking behaviour change experiment. This turned into a partnership with local businesses, national governing bodies of sport, social organisations and volunteers.
It initially ran for 12 months and then, due to huge success, the programme was extended and fully funded by a Lottery grant to March 2017.
Named ‘I Will if You Will’ the programme tested what does and doesn’t work when it comes to getting women and girls more active. And the findings from I Will if You Will helped shape This Girl Can, Sport England’s national female fitness campaign.
I Will if You Will has helped to create a social movement that empowers women to try new things and take ownership of their physical health. As a result, the programme has had life changing impact and significantly increased female participation. This has effectively narrowed the gap between the number of men and the number of women taking part in sport and raised participation to higher than the England average. Over the course of the course of the programme I Will if You Will:
- Attracted 20,000 plus participants
- Delivered 20,000 plus sessions
- Achieved 200,000 plus attendances
Delivery of the programme is ongoing, in partnership with the community.
